By Lyndi I grew up enjoying pepper grass sandwiches. It was a staple in my lunch box in the spring and fall. Two slices of homemade bread, slathered with real butter, piled high with 'garden cress' - pepper grass. Sprinkled lightly with salt. It was (still is) heaven in a sandwich. It's great in salads, or just munching from the garden. But for me, the sandwiches has always been my first spring love.
Pepper grass is a little spicy - hence it's name. It doesn't grow well in very hot weather, but does wonderfully when the temperature isn't climbing to the point where you could cook an egg on the sidewalk.
My Mum grew up eating pepper grass, as did her Mum before her. It's a family tradition. I also grow it indoors in the winter. While it doesn't produce scads of leaves indoors, it grows enough food to give me a few sandwiches each winter.
