This Butternut Squash is NOT a Compact PlantAug 24, 2011

Planted this combination in my garden this year. I've been vegetable gardening for a while, and was interested to try a supposedly well behaved version of butternut squash, as I know it can take over a small garden.
Good plant/BAD plant. BEWARE.
These seeds do indeed grow plants that quickly produce an abundant crop of nearly full sized good looking squash, but the plant is an absolute THUG in the garden. I mean it sprawled all over, happily setting fruit on top of other plants from six to eight feet away in all directions! Even my zucchini is afraid of this plant. I ended up pruning some of its vines to keep it somewhat in check.
If you have a limited amount of space to grow butternut squash in your garden, stick to a fully hybridized 'bush' form of this plant.

"Focused on pinecones"
I was looking for an early butternut squash to try out. Now it arrived as a dual packet and sure enough so it says but for some reason I didn't catch on to that. The problem with it being a dual item is we have only room for 1 to 2 plants at best and probably can not tell if the plants that come up are going to be butternut or the delicata? To use it does matter.
Otherwise I am glad to have found a shorter season winter squash and who knows perhaps if it turns out to be delicata we'll find we like it as much or more. Until then....I don't think mixed seeds are such a great idea. You'd sell more....plus I don't want to make my own hybrids.
